Cake Boards and Cake Carriers

A well-packaged cake is always a welcome gift: whether it's a cake to take to a dinner party with friends or a tray of pastries for Sunday lunch, cake carriers and cake boards are essential items for presenting your cakes elegantly and protecting them during transport.

Cake boards, also known as cake boards, are rigid supports that have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among cake design enthusiasts, for supporting and presenting cakes professionally. They are generally made of cardboard and come in different sizes and shapes, such as round, square or rectangular. Cake boards are perfect for supporting multi-tier cakes: this way your creations will not warp or break due to the weight between one tier and the next.

  • Material. They are usually made of cardboard, but can also be found in aluminium or paper. It is important that the surface in contact with the cake is covered with a smooth film that makes it waterproof and therefore hygienic. If the cardboard base does not have the film, the cardboard surface can be covered with aluminium foil or baking paper to ensure hygiene and food safety.
  • Shapes. Cake boards are available in many shapes and sizes, for example square, rectangular or the classic round ones. They can vary in size depending on the type of cake they need to support: there are discs with a very small diameter for cupcakes or ring cakes, or very large ones for wedding cakes or special compositions.
  • Thickness. Thickness can vary, but is generally around 3–4 mm. Thicker cake boards are also available, but these are usually chosen for special compositions or particularly heavy cakes.
  • Versatility. They can also be used as display stands to present and serve cakes, cupcakes and tarts in an elegant way.

In complex creations or multi-tiered cakes, cake designers and pastry enthusiasts cover the cake board with sugar paste to hide the cardboard base and make the cake look more uniform and elegant. Here's how to do it:

  1. Form a cylinder with the sugar paste and place it on the board: it doesn't need to be the exact size, and there's no need to put glue or gelatine on the cardboard base.
  2. With a rolling pin, roll out the sugar paste until the two ends of the cylinder meet: try to achieve an even thickness.
  3. Smooth the surface and test it with the cake mould: all spaces should be covered; any excess or gaps should be trimmed.
  4. Trim the sugar paste: the edge can be finished with a small coloured ribbon — we recommend matching it with the predominant colours of the cake, or with other types of decorations.

Based on the shape and size of the cake board, we also choose the cake carrier. The cake carrier is a container used to transport cakes and pastries without spoiling their shape or decorations. They come in different sizes and dimensions: cake carriers with handles are usually preferred to make them easier to carry, and square ones are popular since they can accommodate the widest variety of shapes.

Cake carriers have several features that make them ideal for transporting and storing cakes, for example:

  • Tall lid. Plastic models have a tall lid that locks securely to the base, while cardboard models have a closure on the handle. Both types provide ample space for tall cakes and prevent them from being damaged during transport.
  • Comfortable handle. A cake carrier usually has a comfortable handle that can be gripped firmly to ensure safe transport.
  • Safety latches. Plastic models have sliding safety latches that prevent the cake from moving while grasping the top handle and tilting the container, also ensuring that the cake stays in the correct position during transport. Cardboard cake carriers, on the other hand, have one or more cardboard strips that work in the same way: they protect and secure the cake during transport.
  • Ribbon eyelets. Some types of cake carriers have eyelets for decorative ribbons, which are especially useful if you are giving a gift or celebrating an event such as a graduation or christening.
  • Multiple sections. Some cake carriers have multiple sections, allowing you to store and transport several small cakes or cupcakes at once.
